Course Descriptions

East Asian History 1: Overview

This course is designed to provide students with a basic knowledge and understanding about modern history, society, and political economic structures of East Asian countries up to the end of World War II, which serve as a background of contemporary politics in East Asia.

East Asian History 2: Comprehensive Review

This course explores in-depth knowledge and understanding about recent history, society and political economic relationships between East Asian countries after the end of WW II. Through lectures and discussions, students will obtain comprehensive understanding about current social, political and economic issues among the three major East Asian countries of Korea, China and Japan.

Exploration of Career Development in IR Major

This course is designed to help students prepare for their career development in IR fields. Through individual and group projects, students are expected to find their aptitudes and qualifications, and get ready to search their best possible jobs.

Korean Politics

This course is designed to understand political history, political culture, and other main issues of Korean politics.

Korean-Japanese Relations

This course is designed to understand political and foreign relations between korea and Japan.

Introduction to International Negotiation

This course introduces empirical assumptions of the elements of international negotiations, negotiation strategies and tactics, and ethical issues in negotiations, and also examines how such assumptions are applied to actual negotiation processes and conflict resolutions through negotiation simulations. Students are expected to find their own ‘negotiation style’ and learn effective ways of conflict resolution, which is the very practical goal of this course.

Urbanism and Locality in Northeast Asia

The purpose of this course is to study Northeast Asian urbanism and locality in comparative historical viewpoints to enhance understanding interdisciplinary knowledge of Northeast Asian regions.

Theory & Practice of Foreign Policy Making

The purpose of this course is to understand the mechanisms such as the sources and instruments involved in formulating foreign policy making process and to survey the evolution of foreign policy of the major countries.

Chinese-Korean Relations

This course will discuss the economic and security relations between China and Korea since the diplomatic normalization in 1992.

War and Peace in Northeast Asia

This course examines the historical legacies and territorial disputes affecting current diplomatic relations of Northeast Asian countries, and explores various policy options for the development and maintenance of peaceful relationships between regional countries.

Political Economy in Northeast Asia

This course explores the interaction between politics and market in Northeast Asia. Students will learn IPE theories, trade, globalization, regional economic cooperation. Through lectures and discussions, the role of states, mutual interactions of domestic and international politics, the balance between cooperation and conflict, and the effect of int`l institutions on the regional economic relations will be explored.

NGO Exchanges in Northeast Asia

This course aims to survey activity of important NGO exchanges in Northeast Asia.

US-China Relations and the Future of Northeast Asia

This course is designed to understand the Major security and economic issues of US-Chinese relations. Through the course work, students will obtain the broader perspectives of US-Chinese relations.

China Studies

This course aims to provide students with a comprehensive knowledge about political and economic structure, society, culture and history of China.

Japanese Politics and Foreign Policy

In this course, students will understand political history, political institutions, political culture and foreign policy of Japan.

International Organizations

This course is designed for students to understand the formation and evolution of international organizations as well as their roles, processes, and functions in the contemporary world. The course discusses a variety of international organizations including formal international organizations, treaty organizations (NATO), regional organizations (EU, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations), and international NGOs like Amnesty International.

U.S. Politics and Foreign Policy

This course scrutinizes the US domestic politics and foreign policies leading today's international politics. It covers the country's history since the second World War and its policy-making process.

Japan Studies

This course aims to provide students with a comprehensive knowledge about political and economic structure, society, culture and history of Japan.

Chinese Politics and Foreign Policy

The main purposes of this course are to analyze China's political changes since 1949, its political behavior, political culture and relations with foreign countries.

The Structures and Changes of Chinese Society

This course looks at how the basic structure of Chinese society has changed through socialist reforms and discusses the rapid social structural changes in the post-Mao period.

Field trip to cultural and historical sites

This course is designed as field trips for students to visit historical sites in and near Seoul. Students will experience the coexistence of traditional culture and modern life style in Korea.

This course reviews ecological condition and environmental protection efforts of Korea.

This course examines the advanced logistics system of Korea, and the trade relationships between Korea and its major trading partners.
