Dominates the 2024 ROBOTWORLD ‘Seoul International Robot Contest’

Kwangwoon university’s robot game team, ‘ROːBIT,’ participated in Asia's largest event, the ‘2024 ROBOTWORLD’ exhibition and international robot contest, held from October 23 (Wed) to October 26 (Sat) at KINTEX Hall 1 in Ilsan. The team swept four awards, including first place (President's Award) in the Humanoid Robot Sports Intelligence High-Tech League.

The ROːBIT Humanoid Team won first place (President's Award) and second place (Commissioner of the Korean Intellectual Property Office's Award) in the Intelligent High-Tech category of the Humanoid Robot Sports Division. This year's competition was conducted in a modified biathlon format, where humanoid robots competed to pick up a ball, score a goal, navigate rubber floors, and clear hurdles in an obstacle course to reach the finish line. The intelligent high-tech event in the Humanoid Robot Sports category of the competition required the highest skill level, with robots competing in two missions - obstacle running and basketball - without human control.

ROːBIT's Intelligent Robot Team also won 2nd place (National Technology Standards Directorate Award) in the steamcup Turtlebot Autorace category. The TurtleBot Auto Race is a competition where robots autonomously navigate maps and complete missions by recognizing lanes and use navigation technology to avoid obstacles independently without a camera.

Finally, ROːBIT's Intelligent Robot Team won 3rd place in the XYZ Human-Robot Interaction Technology Implementation Challenge (Korea Robot Industry Promotion Agency President's Award). The XYZ Human-Robot Interaction Technology Implementation Challenge is an event focused on developing robotic services based on creative scenarios where a robotic arm interacts with humans in everyday situations. RO:BIT developed a ‘Kanbubot,’ a robot capable of playing board games with humans, which received high praise in the competition. Also at the competition, ROːBIT received attention for developing a robot service that can communicate with users by voice (TTS) to play sports.

Sojeong Yoon, leader of RO:BIT’s Humanoid Team, and Seunghun Lee, leader of the Intelligent Robot Team, shared their thoughts: “Participating in SRC IRC and preparing for the robotics competition provided a great opportunity to learn various aspects of robotics technology.” They added, “We want to express our appreciation to our team members who dedicated themselves day and night to research tirelessly, even in challenging situations.

Myungjin Lee, captain of RO:BIT, expressed his gratitude, saying, “I would like to thank Kwangwoon University and Professor Kwanghyun Park for their full support, which enabled RO:BIT to gain valuable experience and achieve great results.”

ROːBIT also participated in the ROBOTWORLD exhibition booth at Exhibition Center 1 to showcase the robots and technologies it has developed. This year, RO:BIT showcased their new quadruped robot platform, currently in development, along with the defense robot KULS for indoor reconnaissance and rescue, an autonomous delivery robot, a dance robot, and the humanoid robot CHULSU. They engaged in discussions and technology sharing with industry professionals and students interested in pursuing careers in robotics at ROBOTWORLD.

 Founded in 2006 as the first university robot game team in Korea, RO:BIT is currently composed of 25 members, led by Director Jae-Hyun Han (Head of External and International Affairs Office), Deputy Director Professor Kwanghyun Park (School of Robotics), and Captain Myungjin Lee, and two team divisions. Since its founding, RO:BIT has built a reputation as one of the top teams in the country, achieving outstanding results in over 400 competitions and playing a leading role in promoting Kwangwoon University.
