Professor Joo-Hyung
Chae (Electronics and Communications Engineering) from Kwangwoon University has been selected as the
principal investigator for the Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
field in the first half of 2024 by the Samsung Future Technology Promotion
Project. The research topic is 'Optimization Design of High-Density Parallel
Data Transmission and Reception Buses,' and Professor Chae's research team will
exclusively conduct this research, receiving support for four years starting
from June 2024.
With the advent of
the big data era leveraging artificial intelligence and machine/deep learning,
there is a rapidly increasing demand for ultra-high-performance AI computing
that can enhance the efficiency and accuracy of these computations. In response
to this trend, Professor Chae's research team aims to develop technologies that
can improve the computing performance of AI semiconductors. They plan to
challenge the world's highest level of high-density interface research by
proposing new signal processing methods applied to transmission and reception
circuit technologies used in various applications, including on-chip global
data buses, HBM interfaces, chiplet interfaces, and multi-chip modules. Through
this project, they expect to derive new data transmission methods and circuit
design technologies necessary for on-chip/off-chip parallel interfaces, thereby
presenting a new paradigm that will significantly improve the data transmission
and reception performance of high-performance AI/system/memory semiconductors
such as HBM in 5 to 10 years.
The Samsung Future
Technology Promotion Project is a public research support project initiated by
Samsung Electronics with an investment of 1.5 trillion KRW since 2013, aiming
to nurture and support science and technology that will be responsible for the
future of South Korea. Every year, it selects support projects in the fields of
basic science, materials, and information and communication technology (ICT) in
the first and second halves and designates future technology fields necessary
for the nation through an annual 'designated theme project contest,' providing
support for relevant research.
