The research
team of Professor Chul-hwan Park (Department of Chemical Engineering) announced
that Ji-hyun Bae, a master's student (advisor: Professor Chul-hwan Park, Department
of Chemical Engineering), won the Outstanding Paper Presentation Award at the '2024
Korean Society for Biotechnology and Bioengineering (KSBB) Spring Conference
and International Symposium', held at the Changwon Convention Center from April
17 to 19.
The
society is a representative society in the field of biotechnology, with about
10,000 BT experts and companies as members, and 533 latest research papers and
380 posters were presented under the theme of 'Advanced Biomanufacturing for
Sustainability and Well-being.'
Ji-hyun
Bae received the award by presenting a paper, 'Acid Hydrolysis of Saccharina
japonica and Inhibition of Aliphatic Acids and Furan Compounds,' which proposed
efficient utilization of carbohydrates contained in kelp (Saccharina japonica)
as an alternative to make a strategy for bio-refinery based on marine biomass.
Ji-hyun
Bae said, “I enjoyed the process of attempting a lactic acid production
strategy using seaweed biomass to overcome the limitations of using traditional
starch-based and lignocellulosic biomasses, and I was honored to introduce it at
the conference. I plan to further develop the research to achieve greater
results.”
Professor Chul-hwan
Park, who supervised the research, said, “It is immensely rewarding to watch
the students grow,” and left a message of encouragement, saying “I hope they will
continue to challenge and develop.”
