Received
the Best Paper Award at the KJCCS 2024 International Academic Conference
Students Seung-yeop
Baek and Dong-gi Jung from the research lab of Professor Hyoung-Gook Kim (Department
of Electronic Convergence Engineering) at Kwangwoon University won the 'Best
Paper Award,' which is given to researchers who published and presented
outstanding papers, at the '10th Anniversary Korea-Japan Joint Workshop on
Complex Communication Sciences (KJCCS 2024)' held at the Kamenoi Hotel Beppu in
Japan from January 29 to February 3, 2024.

The title
of the paper is 'Haptic Texture Recognition System Based on Characteristics of
Object Surface Material Using Convolutional Recurrent Neural Network.' It
proposes a method to extract local and global features by applying a
convolutional recurrent neural network (CRNN)-based feature extractor to a
database of haptic vibrations generated by an object using a stylus pen, and to
recognize and output which material the object is made of among 50 materials.
By
combining Convolutional Neural Networks commonly used in existing deep learning
methods with Bidirectional Gated Recurrent Units (BGRU), which show excellent
performance in processing time-series data, improved results were obtained.
In the future, it is expected to contribute to research on human-centered artificial intelligence systems by analyzing the correlation with human emotions by combining it with brainwave signals.
