The ‘Process
Design Committee’ team (Heung-Seok Jin, Sun-Mo Yang, Ki-Yeol Jeong) from the
Department of Chemical Engineering at Kwangwoon University won the grand prize
at the the '3rd LG Chemical-Korean Institute of Chemical Engineers Petroleum
Chemistry Olympiad' held from July to October.
The
Process Design Committee team won the award by comparing and analyzing batch
reactors using arc discharge methods and continuous reactors using fluidized
bed to achieve optimal productivity of the next-generation material, CNT
(Carbon NanoTube) and designing the optimal reactor. The judging panel said, “The jury highly appreciated
that the team analyzed the design variables for each reactor in a variety of
ways and logically analyzed to find the optimal design solution. This would be useful in creating competitive
production processes in actual industry settings.
Student
Jin Hyung-seok (Team leader, Process Design Committee) expressed, “I believe it
is meaningful that we were evaluated as being able to design a reactor that secures
feasibility using Aspen (process simulation software), which can be useful in
actual industrial settings. I feel confident to pursue my career in petroleum
chemistry, which is my goal.'
Meanwhile,
the Process Design Committee team won the grand prize by placing first among a
total of 365 teams in the Productivity and Sustainability categories combined,
and each student in the team received a
scholarship of 5 million won and is guaranteed a regular employment-based
internship.
