Lab
The Image
Processing Systems Lab (IPSL) of the Dept. of Computer and Information
Engineering at Kwangwoon University led by Professor Dongkyu Shim, has been selected
for LG Electronics' Target Lab for 6 consecutive semesters. In addition to the
excellence of its research, the IPSL received positive evaluations for the
outstanding results in industry-university cooperation, the dedication of
participating researchers, and the competence of researchers who have been
produced through the Target Lab.
The IPSL
has been conducting cutting-edge research on video compression standards,
multimedia system implementation and optimization, and intelligent image
processing technology since its opening in 2005, and it has produced 8 doctors
of engineering and 39 masters of engineering. The lab has consistently
conducted industry-university research with various companies with leading
technology in related fields such as Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, SK
Telecom, Shinhan Bank, Hanwha Vision (formerly Hanwha Techwin), and Intellect
Discovery, and has conducted 16 industry-university research projects with LG
Electronics. Recently, it has
conducted optimization-related tasks on
smart TV thumbnail decoding with the TV multimedia solution team at the HE
headquaters for four consecutive years,
and the results were installed on smart TVs, and it has contributed to
nine joint submissions of MPEG-I international standard technology research to
MPEG standardization with the C&M Standard Media Standard Team at the CTO's
over five years, resulting in two adoptions.
Professor
Dongkyu Shim said, " LG Electronics' Target Lab and industry-university
scholarship programs are creating a virtuous cycle in which outstanding
students can receive benefits, conduct research, and become active in society
as experts in their fields through employment opportunities related to their
specific majors. We will make efforts to provide numerous opportunities for
current students and graduates through continuous industry-university research
collaboration with various companies."
Meanwhile, LG Electronics selects university research labs closely related to its core research areas as target labs and supports outstanding students in the selected research areas as industry-university scholarship students. Industry-academia scholarship students are selected through LG Electronics' special recruitment process and are eligible to receive scholarship benefits until graduation, with the opportunity to join LG Electronics upon graduation.
