“Universities Should Foster AI And Software, Just as They Led Industrialization With Electronic Engineering”

“The university crisis is no exception in
Seoul. It is a time when a ‘master plan’ that utilizes the strengths of each
university is needed to enhance competitiveness amid a decrease in the
school-age population and financial difficulties.”
Kim Jongheon (61),
president of Kwangwoon University, recently said in an interview with this
magazine, “The internal and external conditions surrounding the university are
deteriorating due to the 14-year freeze in tuition and changes in the
demographic structure.”
Kwangwoon University was
the first in Korea to introduce the fields of electronic engineering and
wireless communication. Kwangwoon University was founded in 1934 by the late
Dr. Cho Kwangwoon, the founder, to nurture technical manpower.
President Kim said,
"For creative and convergent education, university lectures should not be
limited by the existing academic system." A reflection of this principle
is the "KW-VIP (vertically integrated project)", which breaks down
all divisions between academic years, semesters, and departments. This is a
class where students in grades 2-4 team up to participate in professor
long-term research assignments and can be taken up to 6 times before
graduation. At present, projects such as "Research on new materials for
environmentally friendly high-capacity secondary batteries (2020-2028)"
and "Environmentally friendly plasma (a state in which electrons and
atomic nuclei are separated at ultra-high temperatures) medical science system
development research (2020-2024)" are held within this class.
